Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine—and the most abundant intracellular antioxidant in the human body. It serves as the primary substrate for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase, two critical enzyme families responsible for neutralizing reactive oxygen species and conjugating toxins for elimination. Research links glutathione depletion to accelerated aging, neurodegeneration, hepatotoxicity, and compromised immune function. Supplemental glutathione supports phase II liver detoxification and has been studied for skin brightening via tyrosinase inhibition.
